Atomic Masters Performance Program (for experienced racers)
Fall Season is a 14-week program running from early September to mid December. Athletes build on their competitive fitness base and focus on skill development, distance training and blending in crews. Fall racing includes 5k head races such as Secret City Head Race, Music City Head Race and Head of the Hooch.
Spring Season is a 20-week program running from mid January through May. Early weeks include land training and continued development of the racing base. In March, training moves to the water and focuses on technical refinement and transfer of fitness to moving boats on the water. The goal is to develop in all areas to reach desired levels at Dogwood Masters Regatta on May 30, 2026.
Summer Season includes training segments for competition in late June or July, and open row singles sessions for the remainder of the summer. The open row segment is a great training transition from spring sprint racing to fall distance racing.
Selective participation in the Performance Masters program is determined by coaches.

Adult Learn to Row - 1:1 Coached Sessions
Atomic Coaches offer private lessons at ORRA to beginner and experienced adults, aged 21+. Lessons offer a customized experience, allowing beginners to move quickly to a point where you may join our development group. Beginners work 1 on 1 with the coach to learn stroke fundamentals over two 90-minute sessions. You will experience rowing in a single scull, under the watchful eye of a Master’s rowing coach. After 2 sessions, you will be ready to move to larger boats with other developing rowers. Register for your private lessons now, or contact our Athletics Director to learn more. Cost: $100 for the pair of lessons.
Atomic Masters Development Program for new and non-racing rowers
In this program, coaches build on lessons from the Adult Learn-To-Row to develop rowing mechanics, build fitness, and prepare rowers for future opportunities with Atomic Rowing. Participation in Learn to Row/Free Trial Days, and/or 1:1 coached sessions is strongly encouraged, but not required to begin the Adult Development program.
Fall Development runs September 2-December 11, 2025. Practices are Tuesday/Thursday 6:30-8:30pm.
Spring Development runs mid January to late May, 2026. Below is a breakdown of focus by months:
- January/February: In this 6-week segment, participants learn rowing basics on land with the use of the Concept 2 Rowing Ergometer. Training sessions focus on technique, using drills and steady state rowing. General strength, basic endurance and team building will lead to increased ability to transfer concepts and practices to moving boats on the water in subsequent sessions.
- March & April: In this 8-week segment, participants expand skill and knowledge of the basics by taking it to the water! This portion offers the opportunity to transfer land rowing concepts and practices to moving boats on the water!
- May: In this 4-week segment, our newer rowers experience the accumulation of skill through time and repetition. This portion provides the opportunity to assess readiness to compete for those who are interested. Masters who compete at Dogwood Masters Regatta (end of May) may continue with our Summer program including Open Rows in July and August.
